Yesterday was NBA Jersey Day, and our school showed up in full uniform. Here’s the scouting report on the day, from its 2020 tip-off to how we run it back every season.
Yesterday, on the eve of the 2026-27 season tip-off, Jersey Day hit our court and it was a full-court press of colour. Throwbacks, city editions, hometown heroes, MVP numbers. Every player laced up, threw on their favourite threads and brought playoff energy to a regular-season practice.
The tip-off: how Jersey Day started
The NBA called its first-ever Jersey Day on December 22, 2020, opening night of the 2020-21 season. Arenas were mostly empty, so the league took the game to the fans: throw on your favourite jersey, snap a pic, post it with #NBAJerseyDay. Fans, players, celebrities and teams all checked in, and the league’s channels lit up.
Year two came during the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Season, a nod to how far the uniform has come since the days of tucked-in singlets and three-inch shorts. Since 2023 the league has locked Jersey Day in for the eve of opening night. It’s the warm-up before the season tips.
Why the jersey matters?
A jersey is your starting lineup card. It says who you study on film, whose step-back you practise on the driveway and which banner you’d run through a wall for.
How we run it at our school?
Jersey Day is a fixture on our calendar every year, and every season the turnout gets bigger. Players, coaches and parents all suit up.
Before the first drill we huddle at centre court for the jersey circle. Everyone gets the ball: who are you repping, and why? Then come the hot takes. Best jumper in the league right now? Who’s winning Rookie of the Year? Is the three-ball overrated, or is defence still king? No one wins these debates, and that’s the best part. Different players, different teams, same love for the game.
For us, Jersey Day hits different. As an NBA Basketball School, we’re part of the NBA’s global network of programmes. Our curriculum, our coaching and our core values (teamwork, respect, discipline and love of the game) come from the same league whose jerseys fill our court.
So when fans worldwide post their fits, we’re not watching from the bench. We’re on the roster. And the player wearing someone else’s number today could be the one whose jersey others wear tomorrow.
Big shout-out to every player, parent and coach who suited up yesterday. That was an all-star turnout. Same time next season: we run it back.
Game on. See you on the court.
